881,346. Motor vehicle driving arrangements. COUNTY COMMERCIAL CARS Ltd. Dec. 2, 1959 [Dec. 2, 1958], No. 38895/58. Classes 79(2) and 79(4). A vehicle has a pair of steerable wheels and a pair of non-steerable wheels, the latter being driven through a differential directly from the output shafts thereof or indirectly through a gearing embodying a layshaft, a drive being taken from each output shaft of the differential gear, or layshaft driven thereby, to a wheel of the steerable pair. The steerable wheels are mounted upon shafts supported in bearings in gear cases carried on a supporting structure which is pivotally connected to the vehicle so as to be able to rock about a fore and aft axis, the gear cases being mounted. for pivotal movement about an up and down axis. The differential gear 10, Fig. 1, may drive the layshafts 11 and, through spur gearing 14, 15, the half axles 12 of the non-steerable wheels 13. The layshaft 11 is provided with a braking arrangement comprising brake shoes 16 and drum 18 fixed to a casing 19 surrounding the layshaft and fixed to the differential casing 9. A shaft 30 is driven from each layshaft 11 through a universal joint 25 and bevel gearing 20, 23 and the hubs 48 of the steerable wheels 41 are driven through bevels 50, 49, and universal joints 44 from the shafts 30. The shaft 30 terminates in a member 32, Figs. 3 and 4, provided with two ball races 40 which co-operate with grooves 29 in a cylindrical member 27 to provide a driving, telescopic joint. The wheels 41 are mounted for steering movement in bearings 8 carried by a bracket 51 mounted on a cross arm 52. The cross arm 52 is provided with a rearwardly extending yoke piece 53 and the arm 52 and yoke 53 are pivotally supported upon an arm 54 carried by brackets 66 and 56 attached to a box girder 57 pivoted at 2 to a strengthened portion 59 of the vehicle body (Fig. 2) and also attached to the body by pivoted links 64 and to the radiator mounting 67 by lugs 68 and a removable pin 69. A hook 71 is provided on the forward end of the member 57 and a draw bar 60 extends rearwardly of the vehicle.
