Abstract
The invention comprises water soluble stilbene compounds of the formula <FORM:0881295/IV (b)/1> in which R represents an alkyl or substituted alkyl group containing one or more hydroxyl groups, e.g. b -hydroxy, ethoxy or b -hydroxypropoxy groups, 2 : 3-dihydroxypropoxy, or 2-(21-hydroxy ethoxy) ethyl, or salts, e.g. those obtained with ammonia, amines or alkali metals, of such stilbene compounds. They are prepared by reacting a 4 : 41-diaminostilbene compound with cyanuric chloride or bromide to give a 4 : 41-bis(411 : 611 - dihalogeno-111: 311 : 511-triazin-211-ylamino) stilbene compound which is reacted with at least 2 mols of phenol, substituted phenols, naphthols, or alcohols such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl or amyl alcohol in the presence of alkali, and then heated with excess polyhydric alcohol such as ethylene glycol, in the presence of a basic catalyst. The compounds may be used as whitening agents for polymeric materials in particular cellulosic or proteinaceous matter by incorporating them in the material or applying them from an aqueous media.ALSO:Whitening agents for cellulosic or proteinaceous matter, e.g cotton and paper, comprise triazinylamino stilbene compounds of the general formula <FORM:0881295/IV (c)/1> in which R represents an alkyl or substituted alkyl group containing one or more hydroxyl groups, or salts of such compounds (see Group IV(b)). They may be incorporated in the material or applied from an aqueous solution, e.g. for cotton at between 40 DEG C and 100 DEG C. under neutral or alkaline conditions. The compounds may be used in conjunction with soap or synthetic detergents.
