Abstract

880,916. Latches. MENZIMER, L. W. Oct. 26, 1959, No. 36154/59. Class 44. Door control mechanism, for use with a hinged vehicle door, includes a latch device, a pivotally movable latch member supported by shaft means which are included in the latch device, and a keeper having a recess for movement of the latch member thereinto, the keeper having latch retaining elements engageable by portions of the latch to prevent separation of the door from its frame in the direction of the pivot axis of the shaft means. Fig. 6 shows a pivoted latch member 21 which cooperates with a keeper 22, portions 70, 71 of the keeper serving to prevent separation of the latch member from the keeper in the direction of a rock-shaft 25. The latch member is loaded by a spring 26 (Fig. 2) and may be released by disengaging detent 112 from control member 27 either by a push-button 117 acting on arm 108 or by inside operating means acting through lever 144 on portion 119 of arm 109. The mechanism is in a locked position in Fig. 4, locking being effected either by pull rod 126 being depressed or by a control finger 98 being rotated clockwise by a key. A lever 97 automatically unlocks the mechanism when the inside operating means are used, a portion 147 moving locking lever 96 clockwise about its pivot 122 before arm 109 is moved to release control member 27. The shape of the latch member may be modified to have projecting portions on each side of the latch arm or to have a disc portion attached to its near side and the internal construction of the keeper may be modified; for instance a solid insert takes the place of a bent plate to form the pocket into which the latch arm moves. In all cases, however, in the locked position, both an upper and a lower part of the latch member 21 are prevented from moving in the direction of the axis of the rock-shaft 25 by the upper surface of the keeper.
