Abstract

1,133,189. Latches. L. W. MENZIMER. 4 Aug., 1967 [7 Dec., 1966], No. 35801/67. Heading E2A. A door latch comprises a latch member 25 mounted on a support 36, 38 to move between latching and unlatching positions, mechanism selectively operable to hold the latch member in latching position and to release the member for movement to the unlatching position, a contactor 52 manually operable from outside to operate the mechanism, a link 58 pivotally and slidably supported on the 'support and movable from a first position wherein the link can be pivoted by the contactor 52 to operate the mechanism to release the latch member, to a second position wherein the link cannot be pivoted by the contactor land a locking means connected to slide the link between the first and second positions. As shown, in which the latch member is held against rotation to release a striker pin 26 by a pawl 31 and against a spring 44, the pawl 31 is pivoted on a post 50 and is biassed into engagement with the latch member by a torsion spring 53. The pawl 31 includes a lug 56 which abuts the contactor 52 which is also pivoted on the post 50 and is biassed against a push pin 51 by a torsion spring 54. To permit pivoting of the pawl 31 by the contactor 52, the link 58 is mounted for pivoting and sliding movement on the pin 50 and includes a bend 59 for engagement beneath a lug 60 on the contactor and over a lug 61 on the pawl, ithe link being biassed upwardly by a spring 67. An "inside" locking lever 70 pivoted on a pin 71 and in its unlocking position, Fig.' 2, couples the contactor and the pawl to permit actuation of the latter to release the latch member When the locking lever is pivoted counterclockwise to the locking position, Fig. 4, a leg 72 thereon engages a pin 75 on the link 58 and slides the link to a position in which the contactor and pawl are uncoupled and the, contactor "free wheels". The locking lever is biassed by an overcentre spring 76. The latch is released from the "inside" by a lever (82) Fig. 1 (not shown) an extension 89 Fig. 2, of which engages the link 58. Keyless locking is obtained by depression of the inside locking lever 70 and simultaneous operation of the push pin and closure of the door, which prevents operation of a cancellation lever 92, pivoted to the contactor 52, from moving the locking lever 70 upwardly to the unlocking position, the lever 92 being moved bodily by the contactor to free a surface 105 Fig. 4, from an extension 106 of the locking lever as the lever 92 is pivoted by a cam 95 on a member 48 attached to the latch member, when pivoted by the striker pin upon closure of the door.
