Abstract

841,326. Latches. ROETHEL, J. H. Dec. 14, 1956 [Feb. 17, 1956], No. 38192/56. Class 44 A door latch mechanism comprises a plate portion 10 Fig. 1, for disposition at the free edge wall of a swinging door and having a flange 12 extending from the inner edge thereof, a pivoted latch 14 mounted on the outer face of the plate portion 10, a lever means 20 pivotally mounted on the inner face of the plate portion on a common pivot with the latch, coupling means 18 connecting the lever means 20 to the latch 14, the lever means 20 having an arm 22 extending upwardly from the pivotal axis thereof, outer manually operable means for pivotally actuating the lever means and including a lever 24 pivotally mounted on the plate portion 10 and having a portion movable towards the flange 12 upon swinging of the lever, link means 32 pivotally mounted on the lever portion and having a part 34 arranged in operative relationship with a part of the arm 22 and being shiftable upon swinging of the lever 24 to cause the lever means 20 to swing, the coupling means 18 transmitting swinging movement of the lever means 20 to the latch to swing the latter from door-latched to door unlatched condition, and inner manually operable means to render the link means 32 ineffective. As shown operation of the lever 24 by a push button or handle (not shown) to release the latch, may be rendered ineffective by operation of a lever 41 Fig. 2 on the inside of the door, in a direction opposite to that in which the lever 41 is effective to move the latch to the unlocked position, the lever 41 being pivoted on the flange 12 and operated through a remote control mechanism (not shown). A stop 40, Fig. 1, prevents excessive travel of the link 32. The stop may be so positioned as to abut a part 39 of the link when the latter is raised by the lever 41 whereby to positively block operation of the outside handle or push button. The latch 14 co-operates with a keeper 50 comprising a lower part 52, Fig. 8, provided with two teeth 55, 56 for engagement with a projection 16 on the latch, and a spring loaded slidable wedge 58 against which a housing 13 for the latch slides as the door is moved towards the closed position. In a modification Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) the lever means 20 comprises two super-posed bell crank levers pivoted independently about a common pivot axis and each engageable with the coupling means 18 to release the latch from the outside and the inside respectively and arranged to provide a positive blocking of the outside handle upon reverse movement of the inside handle.
