A door locking mechanism comprises and lock nin secured to the door locking means selectively movable to block or allow movement of the lock pin, latch means acting on the lockine means, and means on a control rod connected to the door to control movement of the latch means. The sliding door 10 is locked by one lug 26 on a pawl 20, pivoting on a mounting plate 22 connected to a plate on a door post 12, engaging a pin 24 on the door. The pawl 20 is retained in this position by a latch 28 pivoting on the plate 22 and controlled by a rod 16. One end of the rod is connected to a door operator 17 and the other end passes through an aperture in a bracket 14 secured to the edge of the door 10, and a collar 18 on the end abuts the aperture. A spring 19 within the bracket allows limited movement of the door to open position until pin 24 contacts lug 27 on the pawl. To open the door, the door operator 17 moves the rod 16 so that a cam 36 thereon engages a cam 37 on the latch 28 to pivot the latch clockwise, the latch spring 30 moves over a centre position to free the pawl 20 which pivots under gravity to release the pin 24 from blocking by lug 27 and to allow the door to open. To close the door, the door operator moves the control rod in the opposite direction the cam 36 over the rod contacts the cam 38 on the latch to pivot the latch anticlockwise, the lug 26 engages the pin 24 to pivot the pawl clockwise and allow the latch to return to its original position under the action of the spring 30. Stop pin 35 and stops 39 and 40 limit movement of the latch and pawl. A mercury switch 41 on the latch may control an indicating lamp or the motor circuit for the vehicle when the door is unlocked.
