Abstract

880,841. Disc brakes. FOULDS Ltd., E. A., and FOULDS, E. T. K. June 7, 1960 [June 16, 1959], No. 20552/59. Class 103 (1). A brake includes a disc interposed between the limbs 17 of a stationary calliper 14, 15, 16 carrying a pair of levers 32 engaging a pair of mutually opposed pads 19, 29, slidably mounted in limbs 17, and being acted on by an electromagnet 34 and its armature 38. Each lever 32 pivoted at 31 to calliper flanges 30 abuts a plate 20 bolted to a plunger 19 carrying a loading plate 27 by a spigot and socket connection 25, 26 and bolts 21, a sector-shaped pad 29 being similarly carried by each plate 27. The plates 20 are biased away from limbs 17 by springs 23 and are prevented from rotating by shoulders 22 of the limbs. The outer part of electromagnet 34 is integral with one lever 32 and has concentric, cylindrical polepieces 35, 36 with a winding 37, a spring 40 within polepiece 36 and adjustable by screw 41, forces armature disc 38 away from the electromagnet to apply the brake via levers 32. Energization of the electromagnet relieves the spring pressure on levers 32 and springs 23 move the pads from disc 10. Brake clearance is adjusted by screws 33 and the respective clearances of the two pads 27 can be equalized by adjustment of screw 43 mounted in calliper channel 15 for engaging polepiece 35.
