Abstract
880,602. Handling pipes in wells. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. May 16, 1958 [May 27, 1957], No. 15839/58. Class 85. Well apparatus for supporting a pipe string comprises a slip assembly 15 having pivoted slips 16, 17 carrying serrated dies 20 which are replaceably held therein by plates 22. The slips 16, 17 are also provided with spaced . cam rings 24 which are adapted to engage cam faces 13 formed in the body 2 of the apparatus when the slip assembly is lowered and to nest within grooves 12 in the said body when the slip assembly is elevated, each slip being swung about its pivot 18 by a torsion spring. The slip assembly is elevated by a U-shaped yoke 27 swung about pivot pins 29 in the body 2, a spring assembly being provided to counter balance the weight of the slips, Fig. 4 (not shown). The slip assembly is, retained in the elevated position by a slotted pin 53 which reciprocates in a housing 50. and is pivoted to the yoke 27. The pin is controlled by a latch member 59 and an operating member 60 therefor which are both mounted on a pivot pin 61. The member 59 is provided with a latch dog 63, an unlocking lug 65 and a locking lug 66 and is connected'to the member 60 by a biasing spring 69. The member 60 is provided with an arm 72 which is pivoted to the housing 50 by telescopic means 74, 75 incorporating a biasing spring 73.
