Abstract

880,597. Xerographic developing apparatus. RANK-XEROX Ltd. May 3, 1960 [May 7, 1959], No. 15530/60. Class 98(2). Xerographic developing apparatus comprises a dispensing member for the liquid developer having raised unwettable portions and depressed wettable portions and means for bring- ing the raised portions into contact with a surface carrying an electrostatic image. As shown, a xerographic plate in the form of a rotating drum 20 is charged at station 21 and then has an image formed on it by a lens 23 which is developed by the dispensing member of the invention in the form of flexible belt 35, which is coated with developer liquid (a dye dissolved in water or oil) from a reservoir 42. The image is then transferred to a web 26 and the drum is cleaned by brush 30. A suitable potential difference is applied between belt 35 and the drum. The dispensing member may be a grained metal lithographic plate or a smooth base plate having raised lines or dots formed on it by any well known means, e.g. in the manner of a half-tone screen.
