Abstract

880,519. Preventing corrosion. CATHODIC CORROSION CONTROL Ltd. Oct. 28, 1957 [Oct. 31, 1956; Jan. 25, 1957(2)], Nos. 33312/56, 2853/57 and 2854/57. Class 123(1). In an impressed current cathodic protective system for an immersed metal structure 6, the anode consists of a stranded or solid core 2 of tinned copper wire, or where the anode is to be slung as a catenary beneath, say, a pier, of steel wire, on to which is extruded by cable making machinery a covering 4 of a lead alloy, the alloy cover being coated with a hard, durable, electrically-conducting film 12 of lead peroxide which is formed during the initial operation of the system by the action of the oxygen liberated at the anode. The coating prevents corrosion of the alloy and thus enables higher current densities to be used during subsequent operation. The hardness, durability and adhesion of the film is due to the inclusion in the base alloy 4 of one or both of the metals silver and antimony, a preferred alloy composition being 93 % lead, 1% silver and 6% antimony.
