Abstract

880,116. Securing bearings on shafts; guards. ATKINSON'S AGRICULTURAL APPLIANCES Ltd. Dec. 8, 1958, No. 39412/58. Classes 80 (2) and 80 (4). [Also in Group XXXIV] The inner race 13 of a ball bearing is attached to a clamp comprising a ring 17 having holes containing pegs 20 which are forced to bed into a shaft 7 by adjusting a screw 24 of a steel collar 21. Shaft 7 telescopically receives a second shaft, both shafts terminating in a universal joint 9. The outer race 11 of the bearing is riveted to a polythene, polyvinyl chloride or steel safety guard 5 which telescopically surrounds a similar guard, an identical ball bearing being provided between said similar guard and the second shaft. The balls of the bearing are of nylon or a phenolformaldehyde resin, alternatively the balls may be replaced by a nylon ring of circular cross-section. In a modification of the guard, a flared end portion is connected to a tubular portion by a convolute rubber hose.
