Abstract

1370013 Machinery guards ATKINSONS OF CLITHEROE Ltd 11 July 1972 [2 July 1971] 31054/71 Headings F2J and F2U A plastics machinery guard 30 for a universally jointed telescopic rotary power take-off shaft 10-14 on a tractor, has an axially split beaded neck 28 providing a number of resilient fingers with radially inwardly directed semicircular section beaded ridges 33 by which the guard 30 is freely rotatably journalled on an externally grooved plastics sleeve 22 securely clamped at 24 to the driving or driven shaft 10. The beaded ends 33 of the resilient fingers are snap-engaged into a groove 26 of the sleeve 22 which is additionally formed with a cylindrical bearing surface 27 for the neck 28, the guard being axially located by the snap connection. Normally the guard 30 will revolve with shaft 10 but on contact with a person, slows or stops permitting the P.T.O. shaft assembly and sleeve 22 to relatively revolve freely within the guard. Alternatively, the guard may be held stationary at all times by a chain and clip (not shown) fixed to a part of the tractor, the neck 28 being modified to include a collar (not shown) housing radially inwardly urged ball bearings for snap engagement in the groove 26 in the same manner as the resilient fingers. A ball 34 is provided in the guard 30 for assembly or release of a universal joint yoke securing cotter 16. An adjacent interfitting guard 31 of the assembly is mounted by an integral sleeve also formed with resilient beaded fingers which are similarly freely journalled in a grooved portion of the P.T.O. shaft 14 as more specifically described in Specification 1,370,014.
