879,988. Converting rotary into reciprocating motion. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd. July 17, 1958 [Aug. 13, 1957], No. 25534/57. Class 80 (1). Reciprocation of a member such as the carriage assembly 6, 8, 9 of a typewriter is effected by a continuously rotating sprocket 3 engaging with a length of chain 4 connected at its ends by links 16 to the carriage assembly. At the limits of the travel of the carriage pins 18, 18a on the ends of the chain 4 engage cam surfaces 19 on a spring-centralized arm 20 which latter maintains the end roller of the chain in contact with the sprocket (see Fig. 3) as it passes around the sprocket to the opposite side thereof when the carriage will then be driven in the reverse direction. Instead of a chain and sprocket, a wire and friction pulley may be used or a rigid rack could be utilized adapted to move transversely as its end passes around the driving pinion.
