Abstract

879,585. Fuel supply systems. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd., JOSEPH. Jan. 18, 1960 [Jan. 19, 1959], No. 1833/59. Class 7(3). [Also in Group XXVI] A submersible aircraft fuel pump comprises a centrifugal impeller 10 fed by a pair of axial-flow impellers 25, 26 mounted on hollow shafts 17, 18 within tubular inlets 4, 5. The shafts 17, 18 are driven from the hub of impeller 10 through a shaft 12 and bevel gearing 13. Fuel serving as motive fluid is supplied by an engine-driven pump to a swash-plate type driving motor through an inlet 27. The outlet 28 of the motor may be connected, as shown, to the discharge volute 1 of the pump so that the motive fluid is mixed with, and cooled by, the pumped fuel. The inlets 4, 5 extend to near the top and bottom respectively of the tank 6 so that one or other of the impellers 25, 26 is submerged during normal or inverted flight. Air or gas bubbles can escape upwardly through the hollow shafts 17, 18.
