Abstract

879,472. Ink-ribbon mechanisms. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1958 [Dec. 20, 1957], No. 40735/58. Class 100(4) Automatic reversal arrangements. A ribbon feeding device comprises a pair of flangeless spools, a rocking pawl 58 actuated from a cam follower 54 and a powered cam 20, and which rocks in one plane to advance one ratchet wheel 48L until one spool is exhausted, whereupon toggle means pivot the pawl, about an axis 90 degrees to rocking movement, so that the pawl acts in a second plane to engage the other ratchet wheel 48R, and reverse the direction of ribbon feed. The action of the toggle means is initiated upon a button on the end of the ribbon, pivoting a guide 30R about pin 32R. This allows right hand flange 40R of a reversing member 38 to move clockwise about the point where the left-hand flange 40L engages the other guide 30L. The lower end of the reversing member has outer arms 72L, 72R, and a central arm 74 which is now in the path of the pawl 58. Rocking movement of pawl 58 in direction of arrow causes arm 72R to shift detent toggle 66 from ratchet 48L to 48R after which a spring 70 pivots the pawl 58 into a plane to engage the ratchet 48R. Detachable holders and spool construction. The spools have no flanges so they may be mounted close together in a removable cartridge 18 of transparent styrene fitted on to a carriage which may move along the printing line as described in Specification 873,920.
