Abstract
1,169,489. Retractable ball-point pens. H. BROSS. 1 Feb., 1968 [4 Feb., 1967; 22 July, 1967; 14 Sept., 1967], No. 5282/68. Heading B6P. A rear push button actuated ball point pen has the push button 4 non-rotatably mounted in the housing with radially projecting cam elements 6 engaging in grooves 11 and 12 defined by longitudinal strip-shaped projections 9 and 10. The turn button 7 (which is mounted on the rear end of the ball point cartridge spring biased to the retracted position) has radially projecting control elements 8 provided with notches 17 which engage the ends of the stripshaped projections 10 in the projected position and the ends of strip-shaped projections 9 in the retracted position. Interaction of the cam faces on the elements 6, the ends of the stripshaped projections 10 and the control elements 8, when the push button is repeatedly depressed, causes the turn button to be rotatively stepped from the retracted to projected to retracted positions. Extensions 27 on the turn button 7 are pressed against the housing inner walls so that the turn button does not drop out from the housing when the ball-point cartridge is removed. Various embodiments are described and all have the radially projecting control elements 8 on the turn button 7 provided with notches 17. The longitudinal strip-shaped projections 9 may be dispensed with, in which case the radially projecting cam elements 6 on the push button may have a width equal to the spacing of the strip-shaped projections 10 (Figs. 12 and 13). Alternatively, two cam elements 6 may have a combined width equal to the spacing of the projections 10 (Figs. 6 to 11). In (Fig. 14) the rear end of the ball-point cartridge is mounted in the push button, passing through a hollow turn button 7, the turn button 7 being biased against the push-button by an additional spring (35).
