Abstract

879,462. Screw-and-nut gearing. CAM GEARS Ltd. Feb. 13, 1958 [Feb. 13, 1957], No. 4952/57. Class 80 (3). In a screw-and-nut device, particularly for a steering gear, balls 3 are circulated in one or more single helix turns between the screw 1 and nut 2 by means of cross-over grooves 4 formed in inserts 5 fitted, but not secured, in recesses or openings in the wall of the nut, the inserts being shaped to seat on the crests of the screw turns to locate the inserts against inward movement. As shown outward movement of the inserts 5 is prevented by flanges thereon. Alternatively, the inserts could be fitted in blind recesses. The inserts may, as shown, be of generally rectangular section or may be of circular section, Figs. 5-7 (not shown), and are preferably of a mouldable material such as soft metal or plastic. Where more than one insert is provided they are angularly spaced around the screw axis. As shown, two inserts 5, 7 are spaced 180 degrees.
