Abstract

879,289. Anodes for preventing corrosion. SPECTOR, D. Feb. 1, 1960 [Feb. 24, 1959], No. 3471/60. Class 123(1) In a galvanic cathodic system for protecting the interiors of oil tanker tanks against corrosion by sea water ballast more uniform current distribution is achieved by employing anodes with their ends shielded by a coating of electrical insulating material, e.g. asbestos cement, which is resistant to sea water the exposed part of the anodes being directed to the more remote parts of the tank interior. As shown in Fig. 1 a number of shielded anodes 3 are mounted on insulated bars 7 bolted between adjacent pairs of transverse reinforcing ribs 2 situated in the base of each central tank 1, the shielded parts of the anodes being arranged to face the lower sides and the base of the respective tank. Anodes 31 are mounted vertically between the bracings 4 of wing tanks 14, 15 each anode in this case comprising a central exposed part 9 and covered end parts 11, 12, Fig. 4, the bar 13 also being covered. The anodes are made, e.g. of magnesium, aluminium, or zinc and plastic materials, if desired reinforced by glass fibre, can be used for coating the anodes.
