Abstract

888,791. Resilient mountings. CANADA, MINISTRY OF DEFENCE. Feb. 2, 1960 [March 11, 1959], No. 3705/60. Class 108(3) [Also in Groups XVIII, XXII and XXV] A consumable anode, for use in the cathodic protection of metals in relatively confined spaces, e.g. in a heat exchanger vessel 3 containing sea water 4, comprises a bulky block of magnesium 1 which is mechanically connected to, but electrically insulated from, a pedestal 2 welded to an inner wall of the vessel by means of a bolt 11 which, with a bar 10 welded to its head, is embedded during casting well within the anode so that it is unaffected by corrosive disintegration until most of the anode has been sacrificed. The bolt 11, projecting through a flat side of the anode 1, threadedly engages a collar 13 disposed centrally within a disc 12 which, with upper and lower layers of insulating material 16, 15, is retained by a dished annular flange 14 when the latter is welded to the vessel 3. A collar 17 and pins 18 secured respectively to the collar 13 and the flange 14 provide connections to a series limiting resistance 6, the collar 13, if desired, being also provided with a lock washer 19. The resistance 6 may be embedded in the insulating material 16 and the parts of the pedestal 2 may be bonded together before the flange 14 is welded to the casing. Anodes of aluminium or zinc, or alloys thereof, may be used.
