879,105. Electromagnetic switches; retarding action of switches. GROTH, P. Jan. 7, 1958 [Jan. 7, 1957], No. 620/58. Class 38 (5). An escapement comprises a synchronous motor 1 driving a gear-wheel 5 anti-clockwise. The wheel 5 carries a block 18 forming part of a free-wheel also comprising a cylinder 7, a cover 8 and rollers 6. A lever 9 biased counterclockwise by a spring 20 is pivoted at 13 and carries a pin 10 normally engaged in a notch 11 in a plate 12 fixed to a pinion 14 coaxial with the wheel 5. A segment 15 pivoted at 25 is normally held in the position shown by a spring 29. Also pivoted at 25 is a lever 23 connected to the segment by a spring 24 and linked to the armature 27 of a solenoid 28. Normally, wheel 5 rotates and the free-wheel slips, but when solenoid 28 is energized, segment 15 is pulled clockwise by lever 23 and spring 24 to rotate the pinion 14, plate 12, cover 8 and cylinder 7 counterclockwise at the speed of the motor. After an adjustable delay determined by the positioning of a stop 22, the lever 9 is moved clockwise about pivot 13, thereby releasing the plate 12 and segment 15 for rapid movement by the solenoid, contacts 17 being actuated by a pin 21 on the segment during this movement. Actuation of these contacts de-energizes the solenoid, and the segment returns to the position shown. The motor 1 may control several timers simultaneously.
