Abstract
878,911. Nuclear fuel elements. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 10, 1958 [Oct. 14, 1957], No. 32387/58. Class 39(4). A nuclear fuel consists of particles of UO 2 in a matrix of a refractory material (e.g. BeO or SiC) having a much higher thermal conductivity than UO 2 ; the refractory occupies 25% to 40% of the total volume UO 2 of particle size 25-100Á is ball milled or otherwise blended with the refractory (size 1-5Á) and a binder, and the mixture is pressed or extruded, dried, and sintered at 1600‹-1750‹C. in hydrogen. The UO 2 may be enriched with U<SP>233</SP>, U<SP>235</SP> or Pu.
