Abstract
792,170. Nuclear reactors. PHYSIKALISCHE STUDIENGES DœSSELDORF. Oct. 29, 1956 [Nov. 7, 1955], No. 32929/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). A fuel element for a nuclear reactor comprises an element consisting of U<SP>238</SP> with a natural or enriched admixture of U<SP>235</SP>, the element being provided with a coating of thorium. The fuel element may be in the form of a cylinder comprising an inner rod of uranium and an outer coating of thorium, Fig. 1 (not shown), or may be in the form of a rectangular plate of uranium with thorium plates secured to each side of it, Fig. 2 (not shown). The uranium and thorium need not be in metallic form ; the uranium may be present as a carbide, oxide, nitride or silicide and the thorium may be a mouldable compound such as the silicide, oxide, or carbide. The uranium or its compound may be mixed with a moderator material such as graphite, beryllium, or a beryllium compound to form a homogeneous mixture. The fuel core or the thorium coating or both may be made porous, in which case the pore volume should amount to 5 per cent or more.
