Abstract

The invention comprises 11a , 17a -dimethyl-androstane-11b ,17b -diol of the formula: <FORM:0878733/IV (b)/1> and a process for the preparation thereof which comprises catalytically desulphurising with Raney nickel the 3-benzyl thioenol ether of 11-ketoprogesterone to produce 11,20-diketo-3,5-pregnadiene, hydrogenating the said 11,20-diketo-3,5-pregnadiene to produce allopregnane-11,20-dione, subjecting the latter compound to side chain degradation at position 17 to produce androstane-11,17-dione, and treating the said androstane-11,20-dione with a Grignard reagent to produce 11a ,17a -dimethylandrostane-11b ,17b -diol. Hydrogenation may be effected catalytically and side chain degradation may be effected with acetic anhydride and p-toluenesulphonic acid followed by treatment with ozone.
