Abstract

878,559. Pistons. WELLWORTHY Ltd. July 18, 1960 [July 17, 1959], No. 24638/59. Class 122 (1). In an aluminium alloy piston wherein at least one of the compression ring grooves 3, 4, 5 is formed in a ring carrier insert 6 which is of harder metal than aluminium and bonded to the aluminium alloy, the mean diameter of the piston head at ambient temperatures increases from the top end of the head towards the gudgeon pin axis such that at normal working temperatures the head is substantially parallelaided. The grooves are machined so that their side walls are frusto-conical and inclined from the bottom of the groove towards the top end of the piston head at an angle of “ to ¥ degree to planes perpendicular to the axis of the piston. The insert may be bonded in the piston by the method described in Specification 599,684.
