Abstract

Generally radial beams which support a reactor core are themselves supported at points away from their ends, so that the load on each beam is roughly balanced about the point of support. Fig. 1 shows a CO 2 cooled graphite core mounted inside a pressure vessel on a rectangular grid 18. The grid 18 is carried by a central cylinder 21 and twelve radial beams 20. The radial beams rest on a flange 16 on a skirt 14 which is an extension, through a member 7, of a skirt 12 which supports the pressure vessel. The beams may be tapered, with their greatest depths at the points of support, as shown by the dotted line 30. Deflector plates 26, 27 and 28 are provided to prevent the accumulation of rubbish in the bottom of the pressure vessel, guiding it instead into the coolant ducts 6.
