Abstract

877,156. Screw-cutting machine details. VOUCHER Ltd., KENCH, E. R., and COOPER, C. April 19, 1960 [April 18, 1959], No. 13288/59. Class 83 (3). An automatic screwing machine comprises a tool 10 having squared portions 18, 19 on its shank 14 which may be in two parts, two collets 21, 22, in a chuck 16, for selective engagement with the square portions, and a sliding ring 23 for selectively engaging the collets with the shank. The work is fed by a feeding device which comprises two rams 40, 41 of pneumatio cylinders 38, 39, which are alternately actuated to hold a workpiece 20 in a feed pipe 35. In operation, a number of workpieces, e.g. tubes 20, are fed into the pipe 35, the first one resting on the ram 41 which is extended through an aperture 37 in the pipe. The ram 40 is actuated to hold the second tube in the pipe, and ram 41 is retracted thus allowing one tube to pass down the pipe and rest on the collet 21. The ring 23 having a further ring 29 connected thereto by rollers 27 journalled by pins 28, is moved axially until the collet 22 clamps the tool at 19, and the collet 21 is released, thus allowing tube 20 to fall on to the collet 22. Collet 22 is then released and collet 21 is engaged by moving ring 23 upwardly, and tube 20 moves down the tool 10 until it rests on the threads 11. On expanding vice 30 vertically movable on a column 31, is moved towards the tool 10, grips the work, and then pulls it over the rotating tool, thus producing the thread. As the collet 21 is closed to grip the tool, the position of the rams 40, 41 has been reversed, and a further tube 20 rests on the ram 41. The rams are again reversed and this tube then drops on to the collet 21, and the procedure is repeated. The operation of the parts is carried out in sequence.
