Abstract

565,662. Trimming and expanding tube ends. SHAW, J., and WILLIAMS, M. G. June 7, 1943, No. 9121. [Classes 83 (ii), 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] A tube to be expanded and trimmed, for example, for making a joint in a hydraulic pipe-line for operating aircraft gun turrets, is clamped between jaws 19, 20 mounted between brackets 13, 14 on a saddle 4 fed on ways by a rack bar 5 and pinion 6 as limited by a stop 9. The jaws taper slightly to grip the tube more tightly towards the expanding tool. The lower jaw is mounted on a lever 18 pivoted at 22 and clamped in its raised position by a bolt 24 and hand-operated nut 26. A spring 29 checks unwanted movement of the tommy bar 27. The tube is set by an adjustable stop 34 in a sliding frame 33 raised by a spring 40 as limited by stops 41, 42. A bevel edged opening 36 in the frame is engaged by a fixed cam surface 39 to depress the stop clear of the tools as the work saddle feeds forward. The expanding is effected by a fluted rubbing tool 1 mounted in a spindle 60. After expansion has been effected, the saddle is withdrawn and a lever 43 pivoted at 21 is turned over bringing a spindle 44 into line with the spindle 60. When the saddle is again fed towards the spindle, clutch teeth 57 on the spindle 44 engage with corresponding teeth on a collar at the base of the tool 1. The spindle is then driven and is prevented from moving further with the saddle. A spring 55 is then compressed and the ball races 52 feed over the spindle 44 so that the cutter 66 projects and trims the end of the tube as limited by a stop sleeve 62 contacting the lever 43. The stop sleeve is adjusted by a backing-nut 64 and is clamped at 63.
