876,969. Snap-action switches; retractive switches. SCHNEIDER, H. W. Nov. 12, 1959 [Nov. 26, 1958], No. 38165/58. Class 38 (5). A switch operated by a pull on a cord 6 comprises a base 1 carrying fixed contacts 2 in ratchet-like recesses and a cover 3 with tubular extension 11 housing a contact operating member 8 which has recesses to engage pawls 26 on a moving contact member 9. Spring arms 22 on member 9 alternately bridge and isolate contacts 2 as the member 9 is rotated in 90 degree steps by successive pulls on cord 6. The member 8 is rotatable on a ledge 18 in extension 11 and has slots 19 to accommodate arms 13 of a cord sleeve 7. Arms 13 are urged into engagement with helical faces 12 by a pre-stressed torsion spring 5 such that a pull on cord 6 causes the sleeve 7 to follow a helical path, thereby rotating member 8 and thus contact member 9. Multi-pole switches may be provided (Fig. 5, not shown) by adding bases 1 with associated contacts and coupled members 8. A retractive switch may be provided by bending the ends of fixed contacts 2 at right-angles and replacing moving contact member 9 by a simple metal bridge attached to member 8.
