Abstract
852,427. Thermal switches. DEYRAIL, C. Dec. 2, 1957, No. 37527/57. Class 38 (5). A current-responsive switch comprises a tubular casing having a terminal end cap at each end, a contact-carrying thermal element normally engaging a contact on a resilient member held under compression between a pair of supports, so that deformation of the element displaces the resilient member across dead centre to open the contacts rapidly. In Fig. 1, the thermal element is a bi-metal 19 connected to end cap 2 and carrying a contact 7 co-operating with contact 6 on a snap-acting strip 14, the contacts being reclosed by a resetting button 8a. A blow-out coil 18 is connected in series with the contacts. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), when the strip 14 carries an additional contact co-operating with a contact on a similar thermal element connected to the opposite end cap 1 of the casing, so that the switch is rendered operative again by reversing it physically in its terminals. This arrangement may have two blow-out coils, one of which is connected in each position of the switch. In an alternative arrangement, a switch similar to that of Fig. 2 is mounted between two terminals connected through a change-over switch to a supply terminal.
