Class 40(3) [Also in Group XXII] A metal plate shear has a pair of circular blades 10, 11 rotatable on stationary axes, a guide beam C extending in the direction of cutting and pivotable in the plane of the sheet 12 being cut about a fixed axis 17 on the exit side of the blades 10, 11 under the control of photo-electric devices, and a carriage E movable along the guide beam C and having clamps 74 for holding the trailing edge of the sheet 12. The blades 10, 11 are driven to cut and feed the sheet. In the event of deformation of the shear due to cutting stresses, a light beam from a source 94 fixed to the end of the guide beam C remote from the blades 10, 11 falls on one or other of photo-cells 95, 96 to drive a motor 103 to pivot the guide beam C to reorientate the light beam to its normal direction. In a modification, for making curved cuts the motor 103 is controlled by photo-cells sensitive to guide lines marked on the sheet 12.
