Abstract
876,612. Controlling boundary layer flow. FIRTH CLEVELAND Ltd. July 2, 1957 [Dec. 20, 1956(2) ; Dec. 24, 1956], No. 44292/60. Divided out of 876,611. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] In a fan or pump in which fluid flows transversely through a bladed impeller 1, Fig. 3, the flow being guided by a stationary aerofoil blade 45, the blade 45 is hollow and in communication with fluid at ambient pressure. The low pressure in the region 47 sucks this fluid from the blade 45 through tangentially directed apertures 46, whereby boundary layer separation is prevented. In a modification in which the single blade 45 is replaced by several guide blades as shown in Fig. 5, the guide blades are of refractory material and are notched at 63 to receive a spirally-wound coil of wire 62. The spacing between the turns of the coil is of the same order of magnitude as the diameter of the wire. The coil tends to promote turbulence and thereby reduces the tendency towards flowseparation at the low pressure side of each impeller blade. An electric current can be passed through the coil to heat the gas or liquid for the purpose of varying the Reynolds number and hence the tendency towards turbulence.
