Abstract

1,165,961. Centrifugal and axial-flow pump and compressors; turbines. GARRETT CORP. Oct. 19, 1966 [April 4, 1966], No.46787/66. Headings F1C and F1T. In a machine for transferring energy, a fluid is caused to flow at least twice through a series of blades 16 on a belt 17, to supply energy to or draw energy from at least one of the shafts 10. In the embodiment shown, the machine is a pump having a casing 15, an inlet passage 13 and an outlet passage 14. The inlet and outlet passages and associated casing portions cause the fluid to have uniform energy distribution before its first pass and after its final pass through the blades, and a non-uniform energy distribution between the passes. In Figs. 3a, 3b (not shown), the blade belt is in the form of a ring and mounted on either the periphery of a disc or the ends of an arm to form a rotor, and a substantially toroidal casing surrounds the rotor and internally receives the blades thereof. During operation, the fluid circulates around the interior of the toroidal casing substantially transversely to the direction of rotor rotation and thereby makes several passes through the blades. A toroidal shroud within the toroidal casing is either secured to the tips of the rotor blades or is stationary and closely spaced from the free ends. With compressible fluids, the flow passage area of the casing may decrease in the direction of increased fluid density, but not to a value at which the projected area of the blades in a plane perpendicular to the direction of rotor rotation is less than the projected area of the surrounding portion of the flow passage.
