875,963. Winding yarns. REINERS, W. Oct. 3, 1957 [Oct. 18, 1956], No. 30992/57. Class 120 (2) An automatic thread winding machine of the kind in which the thread is supplied to a package winding station from a cop having a conical nose portion, a reserve coil on the tip of the cop from whence the thread continues as a few intermediate turns of steep pitch over the cop at the base thereof where it is wound to form a second reserve coil, is provided with a member actuable to draw off the reserve coil of thread on the tip of the cop tube, the member being constructed as a suction tube to entrain the drawn off thread and having means to grip the entrained thread so. that the portion of entrained thread leading to the intermediate winding is severed by tension, and with means operable to draw off the intermediate winding and the reserve coil on the base end of the cop tube. As shown, in operation, suction tube 8 is caused to engage the reserve coil 3 on the tip 7 of cop 1 and draw it off. The drawn off portion is gripped by arm 9 pivoted at 10 as shown in Fig. 2 such that the part F<SP>1</SP> leading to the intermediate coils 5 and reserve coils 4 is broken. The portion F of the thread leading from the tip of cop 1 is transferred to a knotting device whilst the intermediate coils 5 and the reserve coils 4 are drawn off by a suction tube 17 (Fig. 3). The cop may be rotated to assist this drawing off action or an air jet may be provided for the purpose Alternatively there may be positive means provided to draw off the coils 4 or to unwind them. Knife or shear means may be provided to sever the portion F<SP>1</SP> of thread.
