A yarn winding machine provided with a suction device comprising a tubular member 15 connected at 17 to a supply of gas under pressure and opening into an exhaust tube 16 at the other end, a notch being provided (see Fig. 2) in the wall of the member 15 crossways to the axis thereof, is characterised in that the notch extends in the wall of the member 15 at least to the axis thereof and that thread guides 20 are provided on both sides of the notch to aid guiding a loop of yarn there-into. In use, the yarn, during winding runs direct from the traverse button 14 on to the package, but upon doffing, the operator margins the device 15, swings the traverse frame 10 until the guide occupies the doffed position, Fig. 1, and brings the thread between package and guide downwards so that it extends across the notch in the device 15 and beneath the guides 20. He now cuts the yarn between the guides 20 and the bobbin and he removes the running yarn, which is being sucked to waste, from beneath one guide 20, to eliminate friction losses. The full package is now removed by the operator and he lifts the running yarn between the device 15 and the traverse guide 14 so that it runs through the guide 21 and over the roller 22. The yarn is now running along the full-line path of Fig. 1. An empty cone is now placed on the spindle 11 which grips the yarn and effects severance by a cutter 23, the severed end being sucked away by the device 15. The handle 21a is then manipulated to release the yarn from the guide 21 and the frame 10 is moved into its normal winding position. U.S.A. Specification 2,706,089 is referred to.
