Abstract

Coating compositions for application in molten condition to articles of food in accordance with the parent Specification comprise 20-50% of an ethyl cellulose which has an ethoxyl content of 47.5-50% and is, in a 5% solution in an 80 vol. toluene-20 vol. ethanol mixture, of viscosity 6-200 c.p., 15-68% of a refined mineral oil of Saybolt viscosity 80-400 units of 100 DEG F., 10-25% of a colourless, odourless, non-toxic plasticizer which is a solvent for the ethyl cellulose, and, in addition, a wax melting at above 100 DEG F. in quantity over 5% up to the maximum compatible. The wax is exemplified by paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, beeswax, carnauba wax, synthetic hydrogenated castor oil wax, wax-like, low m.w. polyethylene, ozokerite, cork wax, Chinese wax, spermaceti, wool wax. The plasticizer is exemplified by methyl phthalyl ethyl-, ethyl phthalyl ethyl- and butyl phthalyl butyl glycollates, acetyl tributyl citrate, di-isobutyl adipate, acetylated mono- and di-fatty acid glycerides, di-2-ethylhexylphthalate, glyceryl monooleate, glyceryl monostearate, n-butyl stearate, alkyl aryl phosphates, castor oil.
