Abstract
Coating compositions comprise 95 to 99,5% by weight of a paraffin wax having a melting point from 120 DEG to 150 DEG F. and 0,5 to 5% by weight of a vinyl ester homopolymer or copolymer having from 12 to 1002 monomer residues per molecule, the acid radical of each monomer residue being aliphatic and containing 9 to 25 carbon atoms. The paraffin wax may be a crude scale, semi-refined or a refined grade, containing up to 3% of oil, and may also contain up to 15% of microcrystalline wax. The preferred polymer is a copolymer of vinyl stearate and vinyl palmitate. The compositions may also contain an antioxidant, e.g. a tertiary butylated hydroxyanisole or 2,6-di-t.butyl-4-methyl phenol. The compositions may be used for coating paper and paperboard. Paperboard milk cartons may be coated by dipping in the molten compositions, allowing to drain for 5 seconds and immersing in water at 70 DEG F. to cool the coated carton.ALSO:A coating composition comprises from 95 to 99.5% of a paraffin wax having a meltingpoint from 120 DEG to 150 DEG F. and from 0.5 to 5% of a vinyl ester homopolymer or copolymer having from 12 to 1,002 monomer residues per molecule, the acid radical of each monomer residue being aliphatic and containing 9 to 25 carbon atoms. The paraffin wax may be a crude scale, semi-refined or a refined grade containing up to 3% of oil and may contain a proportion of microcrystalline wax. The vinyl ester polymer is preferably a copolymer of vinyl stearate and vinyl palmitate. The composition may also contain an antioxidant such as a tertiary butylated hydroxyanisole and 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-methyl phenol. The composition may be used for coating paper and especially for coating milk cartons.
