Abstract
Zinc and cadmium selenides are prepared by heating the corresponding selenide hydrazinates in an inert non-oxidizing atmosphere or reacting it with an acid. The zinc or cadmium selenide hydrazinates may be prepared from the corresponding selenites and hydrazine as described and claimed in Specification 875,773. Conversion of the selenide hydrazinate may be effected by heating in an inert atmosphere at 50-70 DEG C. but preferably the heating is effected in the presence of an acid such as hydrochloric, hydrobromic or sulphuric acids or organic carboxylic acids such as formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric, or benzoic. Copper or silver activators may be added to the selenite from which the selenide hydrazinate intermediate is formed whereby they may be incorporated in the final selenide in amounts of about 0.01% mol. or less.
