Abstract

The invention comprises monochlorinated derivatives of tolylene 2 : 4 and 2 : 6-diisocyanate wherein the chlorine atom is in the aromatic nucleus. Compounds specified are 5-chlorotolylene 2 : 4-diisocyanate, and mixtures thereof with 3-chlorotolylene-2 : 6-diisocyanate. The compounds of the invention may be prepared by reacting tolylene 2 : 4 or 2 : 6-diisocyanate or mixtures thereof with chlorine at a temperature up to 80 DEG C. The reaction may be carried out in an inert solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, and a halogen carrier such as iodine may also be present. Examples are given. 5-Chlorotolylene-2,4-di-isocyanate is converted to 5-chlorotolylene-2,4-diamine by hydrolysis. Specification 752,931 is referred to.ALSO:Monochlorinated derivatives of tolylene 2 : 4 and 2 : 6-diisocyanate wherein the chlorine atom is in the aromatic nucleus, viz. 5-chlorotolylene 2 : 4-di-isocyanate and mixtures thereof with 3-chlorotolylene 2 : 6-di-isocyanate are used as intermediates in the manufacture of polyurethanes. The isocyanates may also be converted into reaction products with, e.g. phenol, or acetoacetic esters, or polymers by the use of basic catalysts. Specification 752,931 is referred to.
