Abstract
875,753. Making tyres. COOPER TIRE & RUBBER CO. June 15, 1960, No. 21083/60. Class 87(2). An attachment for a tyre-moulding press, for the post-curing inflation of nylon cord tyres, comprises a lever 25, Fig. 2, pivotally mounted on the side of the press and fitted with one or more tyre rims 27, 28, which lever is linked to the mould mechanism so that it is moved to a position in front of the press at the " mouldopen " stage, Fig. 1 (not shown), and to the side of the press at the " mould-closed " stage, Fig. 2. The lever 25 is pivotally connected by a link 35 to a bull gear 19, which is rotatable to open and close the mould and move the lever 25. Air at high pressure is automatically fed to the tyre rims, 27, 28 see Fig. 1 (not shown), by air lines 39, through a valve 38, opened by an actuator 40 on the bull gear 19, when the mould closes. The tyre rim 28, Fig. 4, comprises a pair of rim halves 29, 30, suitably shaped to facilitate the fitting and removal of the tyre 34 and ensure a leak-proof air seal. The rim halves are welded together and to a hub disc 31, removably positioned on a flanged stud 32 secured to the lever 25. Tyres are taken from the moulds, fitted on the rims and inflated, while still hot, to a pressure greater than that used in normal service, to stretch the nylon cord. After cooling during the next moulding cycle, the tyres retain their inflated size permanently. A modified form of the apparatus, suitable for a different type of tyre press, Figs. 5 and 6, (not shown), is described.
