Abstract
875,532. Girders and building units. LEITH, K. Aug. 30, 1957 [Sept. 1, 1956], No. 27348/57. Classes 20(4) and 87(1) In a girder or beam formed of aligned ceramic blocks and reinforcing means, the blocks comprise base parts 1, Figs. 1 and 2, with a recess or recesses 3 containing the reinforcing rods 4, and cover parts 2 of different shape, the shapes being such that the rods 4 and the surrounding concrete d can be placed in position in the base and then the covers 2 applied. In forming a beam the joints 12, 13, Fig. 2, between the bases and covers 1, 2, are preferably staggered. The covers 2 may have keying recesses 5 opposite the recesses 3 and keying recesses 10 in the outer surface. The separate recesses 3 may be replaced by a single channel, Fig. 6, and the cover 2 may be U-shaped, which allows keying hooks 15, Fig. 7, to be concealed within the channel of the cover 2 until bent upwards to 15<SP>1</SP> prior to the application of concrete on the top of the beam. Alternatively the recess may be circular. In Fig. 9 the beam is formed with the covers 2 uppermost but in use it is turned so that the members 1, 2 form the sides, the lower part of the beam having a greater number of reinforcing rods 4 than the upper part.
