Abstract

875,526. Longitudinally compressed paper &c. CLUPAK Inc. Jan. 16, 1959 [Jan. 20, 1958], No. 1737/59. Classes 42 (1) and 96. In the production of uncreped, longitudinally compressed paper or fabrics &c. of the kind disclosed in Specification 727,261, the pressure of the rubber belt 18 against a rotary, steamheated drum 16 is made uniform along the length of the nip, as by the use of a rigid beam 36 which backs up a thick-walled, small-diameter, pressure-applying cylinder or the like 34. Provision is made for lubricating the belt 18 at the region of contact with the cylinder &c. 34, as by air, or water, or silicone oil or, for a synthetic rubber belt 18, petroleum oil. The lubricant may be pumped at 80 to the interior of the cylinder &c. 34 and through passages 74. The belt 18 may be e.g. 1 inch thick and have a backing of non-stretch cord fabric. Pressure may be applied by hydraulic or pneumatic pistons &c. to the ends of the beam 36. In a modification pressure is applied by a series of fluid-pressure diaphragms and levers &c. spaced at intervals across the machine. The cylinder 34 may be chromium-plated or coated with polytetrafluorethylene to reduce friction.
