[Also in Group XIII] A roller for the pressure treatment of material webs comprises a tubular hollow body 1 adapted for rotation on a stationary core 2 having cylinders 4 containing pistons 5 arranged along its length, the pistons being operated on by fluid pressure which forces slide shoes 18, carried by the pistons 5, against the inner peripheral surface of the hollow body 1 where it is adapted to contact a counter roller or counter surface. The surface of each shoe is recessed and is fed with oil through a bore in the associated piston to form an oil cushion. Oil under pressure is supplied to the cylinders 4 through a passage 8. Alternatively, a gaseous pressure medium may be used. In a modification, rollers 17 in cages 16 are arranged on the inner periphery of the tubular body 1, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
