Abstract

875,119. Electrostatic separators. PETROLITE CORPORATION. June 30, 1958. No. 20847/58. Class 117. Apparatus suitable for the removal of small amounts of dispersed material from dis persions comprises two series of planar electrodes 17, 18 which are hingedly supported within a horizontal container 10 to form treating spaces 20 open at their upper and lower ends. The edectrodes hang by means of U-bolts 30 which pass through openings in the electrodes and which are secured to longitudinal beams 25 for the electrodes 17, and to beams 45 for the electrodes 18. Means for adjusting the longitudinal positions of one series of electrodes relative to the other is provided, Fig 2 (not shown), and spacers prevent unequal spacing of the electrodes when the latter are exceptionally long or when they are distorted. The electrodes 17 are grounded to the container, and the electrodes 18, through brackets 48 and the beams 45, are connected via conductors 55 to a unidirectional high-voltage source. Influent means consists of a riser pipe 75 connected to a manifold 78, pipes 79 and circular spreader plates 82. The dispersion rises from the plates and passes into the spaces 20 where the dispersed phase material coalesces and gravitates to the bottom of the container for collection by effluent means 23 which may comprise a multi-orifice collector. The treated dispersion pases through holes 88 formed in a large number of collector pipes 85 connected to an effluent pipe 84 via a manifold 83. Baffles 66, 70 help to direct the dispersion through the spaces 20.
