Abstract

A lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricating oil and minor proportions of an oil-soluble polymer or copolymer derived from at least one unsaturated compound having at least one ester group together with an oil-soluble copolymer of polyethylene with an ester of vinyl alcohol and a C1-C4 monocarboxylic acid. The oil may be a mineral oil or a synthetic oil such as a synthetic ester. Any compound copolymerized with the unsaturated ester preferably contains a polar group such as a sulphur-, halogen-, or nitrogen-containing group, or an ester, carboxylic acid, anhydride or hydroxyl group. Many examples are given. The preferred vinyl ester copolymerized with the polyethylene is vinyl acetate.
