Abstract

A pour depressant for lubricating oils comprises a terpolymer of (1) an ester of an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and an alcohol of from 8 to 18 carbon atoms, (2) an ethylenically unsaturated ester of not more than 6 carbon atoms, or acrylonitrile, and (3) a monomer of formula CH2=CX-Ar, where X is hydrogen or a C1 to C4 alkyl group and Ar an aromatic group. Monomer (1) may be an ester of maleic, fumaric, citraconic or mesaconic acid with octyl, nonyl, decyl, lauryl, palmityl, hydrogenated coconut oil or hydrogenated palm kernel oil alcohols, or branched-chain primary alcohols made by the oxo synthesis. Monomer (2) may be vinyl acetate, propionate and butyrate, alpha-chloro vinyl acetate, isopropenyl acetate or acrylonitrile. Monomer (3) is preferably styrene or alpha-methyl styrene. The polymerization may be carried out in emulsion or by gamma rays, but is preferably effected in bulk with a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide.ALSO:A pour depressant for lubricating oils comprises a terpolymer of (1) an ester of an alpha, beta - unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and a C8 to C18 alcohol, (2) an ethylenically unsaturated ester of not more than 6 carbon atoms, or acrylonitrile, and (3) a monomer of formula CH2=CXAr where X represents hydrogen or C1 to C4 alkyl group and Ar an aromatic group. The first monomer may be an ester of maleic, fumaric, citraconic or mesaconic acid with octyl, nonyl, decyl, lauryl, palmityl, oxo, hydrogenated coconut oil or hydrogenated palm kernel oil alcohol. The second monomers specified are vinyl acetate, propionate and butyrate, alphachloro vinyl acetate, isopropenyl acetate and acrylontrile, and the third monomer is preferably styrene o alpha-methyl styrene. The terpolymers may be added to mineral lubricating oils, e.g. Kuwait oil, as illustrated by the example.
