Abstract
874,966. Bending sheet materials. SCHREIBER WOOD INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 18, 1959 [Aug. 18, 1958], No. 26501/58. Addition to 794,142. Class 100(2) A method of bending and setting a sheet 29, e.g. of hardboard, to form a hollow body such as the carcase of a wireless cabinet comprises the steps of placing the sheet together with a flexible band 25, e.g. of steel, between an inner former 19 and a multi-part outer former having an intermediate part 20 and two side parts 21 L, 21R, tightening the band 25 around the inner former 19, squeezing the band and sheet between the inner and outer formers, and applying heat to the bent sheet to set it. The former 19 is fixedly supported by a strut 18 from a roof beam 12. The former parts 20, 21L, 21R are carried by hydraulic or pneumatic jacks 14, 15L, 15R respectively. The two ends of the flexible band 25 are gripped in clamps 24L, 24R carried by jacks 17L, 17R, while rollers 23L, 23R which bear against the band 25 are carried by jacks 16L, 16R. Before insertion of a sheet 29, which may be previously damped, in the machine the jacks 14, 15, 16 are fully retracted and the jacks 17 are lowered, Fig. 3. Subsequently the following operations are successively performed: (a) The jacks 17 are raised whereby part of the sheet 29 is pressed by the band 25 into close contact with the lower side of the former 19. (b) The former part 20 is raised by the jack 14 to press against the underside of the sheet 29 and band 25. (c) The former parts 21L, 21 R are moved inwards to press the sides of the sheet against the sides of the former 19. (d) The rollers 23L, 23R are moved inwards to their Fig. 1 position. The sheet 29 is heated to make it set in the shape shown. Heat may be applied by means of an electric heating element 31 in the former 19, the band 25 also being used as a heating element. Alternatively a high frequency current may be passed between the element 31 and the band 25. In a modification the former 19 is movable and the former part 20 is fixed. The formers may be so shaped as to produce curved instead of flat sides on the finished article.
