Abstract
794,142. Laminating-apparatus. SCHREIBER WOOD INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 28, 1957 [Jan. 30, 1956], No. 2951/56. Class 140. [Also in Group XXIII] Hollow bodies having corners of a relatively small radius of curvature are formed by placing laminµ of material, such as plywood or wood veneer, previously coated with a binder, such as Scotch glue or a thermosetting resin, between a flexible band 25 and an inner former 19, operating jacks 17 to pull the laminµ against the underside of the inner former, operating a jack 14 so that a former 20 presses the laminµ against the underside of the inner former, while the band pulls the laminµ round the corners C, D, operating jacks 15 so that side formers 21 press the laminµ against the sides of the inner former and finally operating another pair of jacks, each having yokes 22 carrying rollers 23, so that the band forces the laminµ round the corners A, B and against the top face of the inner former. The jacks may be hydraulic or pneumatic and the jacks 17 for the band 25 are less powerful than those operating the rollers 23 so that they yield as the rollers move inwards. The jacks 17 are pivoted on the machine framework and the other jacks may also be pivotally mounted. Heat for setting the binder may be applied either by supplying electricity to the band 25 and to a strip of metal wrapped round the former 19 or by passing a high-frequency heating current between the band and the strip. In a modification, the formers are shaped to give a convex bottom and concave sides to the body and the inner former is movable while the lower former corresponding to 20 is fixed. The Provisional Specification describes also the forming of a completely closed body in which the ends of the laminµ meet in a rebated lap joint. The inner former is supported from its side or sides so that the top surface is left clear, the upper ends of the bands are cut away to allow them to be crossed and an upper former can be moved down on the inner former.
