Abstract

Solid polyolefins are recovered from solutions thereof in a volatile solvent by continuously spraying the hot solution into a confined stream of cooler water and passing the resultant mixture, at sufficient pressure to keep the solvent and water liquid, through a confined zone, the residue time in the zone being at least 5 seconds, thus recovering the precipitated polyolefin in a non-fibrous particulate form of high bulk density. The polyolefin, e.g. ethylene or propylene, is preferably high density highly crystalline material prepared in the presence of a particulate catalyst comprising chromium oxide at least partly in hexavalent form, supported on silica-alumina. The solution is preferably at a temperature of 270 DEG -310 DEG F. and the water at such a temperature that the resulting mixture is at 110 DEG -130 DEG F. This mixture may be sprayed into a further stream of water in a confined zone and under sufficient pressure to keep the water and solvent liquid and then passed to a heated zone at a sufficiently low pressure for the solvent to evaporate.
