Abstract

A process for the production of a porous body of polypropylene comprises subjecting polypropylene to solvent extraction and thereafter sintering the polypropylene. The extraction can be effected in separate steps with at least two different solvents, e.g. acetone, ether, saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons and alcohols, used successively. The process is particularly applicable to polypropylenes produced by the Ziegler process. Preferably the polypropylene, after extraction, has a molecular weight above 40,000. The sintering may be effected at temperatures up to 170 DEG C. and is preferably carried out in an inert or reducing atmosphere. The material to be sintered may be used in a loose state or may first be shaped under pressure. Pressure may also be applied during the sintering. In an example a polypropylene produced by the Ziegler process, and having a molecular weight of 75,000 is refluxed successively with acetone, ether and heptane, solvent being removed by heating after each stage. The product is moulded and sintered at 100 DEG C. under 20 atmospheres pressure of hydrogen. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 856,735.ALSO:A process for the production of a porous body of polypropylene comprises subjecting polypropylene to solvent extraction and thereafter sintering the polypropylene.
