Abstract

1446755 Seasoning lumber H IZUMI 25 Sept 1973 [18 June 1973] 44934/73 Heading F4B Lumber 14 is seasoned by subjecting it to heat and pressure by saturated water vapour alone within a pressure vessel 11 until the lumber interior is heated up to a predetermined temperature of at least 110‹ C., the vapour then being removed, and the pressure within the vessel being reduced below atmospheric pressure thereby causing water contained in the lumber to boil. As shown, lumber 14 is loaded on a wagon 15 guided by rails 13 in the vessel and a door 12 closed. Vapour is then introduced through vapour jet pipes 16 for a specified period displacing air within the vessel through a release port 18 whereafter the port is closed. After a period the release port 18 is again opened to release the vapour. The vessel 11 is then subjected to vacuum through a port 17. The lumber may be initially subjected to preliminary vapour boiling at a temperature of 105‹ C. The seasoning process may be repeated. A period of natural seasoning may follow the above seasoning.
